The incidence and prevalence of heart diseases in Libya are not well studied. Thus, the magnitude of the cardiovascular impact on the Libyan society is not actually known. However, we know from empirical experience and from some research data that rheumatic heart disease still represent a challenge in Libya, leading to severe forms of valve heart diseases. Initial results of some recent studies concerning Congenital Heart and Ischaemic Heart diseases showed that the prevalence is comparable to the international figures. More studies are needed to explore the incidence and prevalence of heart diseases in Libya, and to study the risk factors leading to the different cardiovascular disorders, and the surgical and interventional outcome.
